Interior architecture professionals understand how people engage with the world, and how structures, spaces and environments can offer outstanding experiences.
They design the spaces, lighting and objects that encourage people to engage and interact – for commercial and domestic interiors, entertainment venues, festivals, exhibitions or theatre sets. Interior architecture professionals create spaces that communicate ideas, values and stories.
Our Interior Architecture course is unique in Victoria, balancing strengths in creative design and building technology. We explore the creative use of space, structure and experience to develop conceptual agendas that are provocative and innovative, and material solutions that address contemporary conditions.
Over half of your study will be undertaken through Interior Architecture design studios. Studio projects regularly offer opportunities to engage with real-world clients as you develop solutions for existing spaces – from dance studios to shopping centres – taking designs from 2D concept to 3D installation.
During your degree you may enrich your learning at Monash's Prato Centre in Tuscany. Located in an 18th-century palazzo 20 kilometres from Florence, this immersive study experience offers access to exceptional art and design work, and a city with rich architectural history. It can extend your exploration of global issues and international collaborations.
During the break between third and fourth year, a six-week work placement with an interior architecture studio or related practice will help you put your skills and knowledge into practice, and take a professional approach to your final year projects.
You will graduate with the competitive advantage of practical experience and already-established connections with potential employers. You will have a command of the strong conceptual thought and valuable practical skills sought by industry. As an Interior Architecture graduate you might adapt existing or heritage buildings for new uses, or design unique objects. You could develop exhibitions or create urban experiences that help communities grow.
